A DISEASE
There’s a certain disease, and the king on his throne
As well as his subjets to catch it are prone;
And the man and woman, the girl and the boy
Who get this disease have an end to their joy.
The sage and the simpleton, monarch and clown
Have often this illnes in city and town;
The queen in her palace, the poor beggar maid,
The young and the old may of it be afraid.
Not learning nor talent, not fame, and not wealth
Restore those who catch it to normal good health;
No skill of physicians, no potions, no pills
Can lessen the sufferer’s trials and ills.
The archangel St. Michael, with sword like a flame,
The cause of this malady long since overcame;
But it broke out on earth, and in lands far and wide,
The high and the low are afflicted with pride.
TRADUCCIÓN
UNA ENFERMEDAD
Hay cierta enfermedad, y el rey en su trono
Y sus súbditos para atraparla están prontos también;
Y el hombre y la mujer, la niña y el niño
Que tienen esta enfermedad a su alegría final ponen.
El sabio y el ignorante, el monarca y el bufón
Tienen frecuentemente esta enfermedad en ciudad y campo
La reina en su palacio, la pobre criada,
El joven y el anciano pueden de ella temer.
Ni la erudición ni el talento, ni la fama ni la riqueza
Restauran a buena salud normal a los que la pescan;
Ninguna habilidad médica, ni pociones ni píldoras
Pueden aliviar los achaques y males del sufriente.
El arcángel San Miguel, con flamígera espada,
Ha mucho tiempo la causa vencido de esta enfermedad;
Mas estalló en la tierra, y en naciones lejanas y amplias,
El alto y el bajo están afligidos con la soberbia.
