LA BUENA MUERTE

Devocionario tomado del Manual de la Confraternidad Bona Mors, publicado en Londres por Burns & Lambert en 1856.

La Confraternidad Bona Mors (Buena muerte) fue fundada el 2 de Octubre de 1648, en la iglesia del Gesù en Roma, por el Padre Vincenzo Carafa, VII General de la Compañía de Jesús, y aprobada por los Papas Inocencio X y Alejandro VII.

 

En 1729 fue elevada a Archiconfraternidad y enriquecida con numerosas indulgencias por Benedicto XIII. Él autorizó al padre general de la Compañía de Jesús, cuyo director era en razón de su oficio, erigir confraternidades en todas las iglesias de la orden jesuita. En 1827 León XII dio al director general la potestad de erigir y afiliar ramas de confraternidades en iglesias no pertenecientes a la Compañía, y darles parte en todos los privilegios e indulgencias de la archconfraternidad.

  

El objeto de la asociación es preparar a sus miembros por medio de una vida bien regulada a morir en paz con Dios. El título largo: «Confraternidad de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo muriendo en la Cruz, y de la Bienaventurada Virgen María, su Madre dolorosa», expresa los principales medios para conseguir ese fin: la devoción a la pasión de Cristo, y a los dolores de María. Además esta unión de oraciones y buenas obras de los asociados y las instrucciones especiales en las reuniones públicas ayudan poderosamente a prepararse para una 'buena muerte.

Las condiciones para la membresía son presentarse al director; expresarle el deseonde hacerse miembro, recibir de él un signo exterior de aceptación, usualmente en la forma de un certificado de admisión; y tener el nombre registrado en el registro local de Bona Mors register. Solo «por una excepción inusual y extraordinaria», dice un decreto de la Sagrada Congregación de Indulgencias, «se permite enlistar a los ausentes». El director está autorizado para decidir qué constituye tal caso excepcional. Las prácticas de la asociación y las indulgencias concedidas a los miembros están especificadas en el manual de la confraternidad.

  

INDULGENCIAS PLENARIAS.

El día de la admisión en la Congregación de Bona Mors, para cualquier fiel que se haya confesado con verdadera contrición, y recibido la sagrada Comunión ese día.

En la hora de la muerte, para todos los miembros de la Congregación que devotamente invoquen el sagrado nombre de Jesús, al menos con sus corazones, si no pueden hacerlo con sus labios.

En cualquiet viernes o sábado del mes, para todos los mlembros que, habiendo confesado sus pecados con la verdadera contrición, recibido oa sagrada Comunión en una iglesia donde esta Congregación esté establecida, y asistirá en la bendición con el Santísimo Sacramento se dé en la noche, o en cualquier viernes y sábado del mes.

  

El día de Navidad, la Epifanía, el Domingo de Pascua, la Ascención de Nuestro Señor, Pentecostés, Domingo de la Trinidad, Purificación de Nuestra Señora, Asunción, Natividad e Inmaculada Concepción, la Natividad de San Juan Bautista, las Fiestas de cada uno de los Apóstoles, de San José y de Todos los Santos, para todos los miembros que, habiendo confesado con verdadero arrepentimiento, recibam la Sagrada Comunión en una iglesia donde esté establecida esta Congregación, y oren allí, como la devoción privada de cada uno sugiera, por la concordia entre los Príncipes cristianos, por la extirpación de las herejías, por la conversión de los herejes e infieles, por la exaltación de la santa madre Iglesia, y por la prosperidad del Soberano Pontífice.

INDULGENCIAS PARCIALES.

En cualquier viernes o domingo de cada mes, una indulgencia de siete años y cuarentenas para todos los miembros que devotamente asistan a la Bendición con el Santísimo Sacramento, que será dada en la tarde, y oren por las intenciones generales anteriormente mencionadas.

  

Cada vez, una indulgencia de un año para todos los miembros que acompañen un cadáver al sepulcro, o en caso de enfermedad u otro impedimento lícito, al oír el tañer de la campana, digan el Padre nuestro y el Ave María por el alma del fallecido; o que asistan a públicas o privadas asambleas de la congregación, en conferencias espirituales, exhortaciones, y otros oficios de piedad; o que escuchen Misa en días de semana, o que examinen cuidadosamente sus conciencias en la noche antes de dormir; o visiten a los prisioneros o enfermos en hospitales o casas privadas.

Todos los miembros pueden, además, en cada día de Cuaresma y en los demás días especificados en el Misal Romano, ganar todas las indulgencias concedidas a los que visitan las iglesias romanas designadas por las indulgencias de las Estaciones, si con las debidas disposiciones visitan devotamente una iglesia donde haya sido establecida una Congregación de la Bona Mors, y allí oren piadosamente algún momento por las intenciones del Soberano Pontífice.

Todas estas indulgencias, tanto plenaria como parciales, pueden ser aplicadas por vía de sufragio a los fieles difuntos, y pueden ser ganadas por los miembros en cualquier lugar donde residan, siempre que cumplan todas las condiciones prescritas, mientras las circunstancias lo permitan.

REGLAS.

Las reglas que deben ser observadas por todos los que desean participar de las indulgencias de esta Congregación y en la comunión de buenas obras son:

• Estar registrado como miembro por una persona debidamente autorizada, y confesarse y comulgar el día de la admisión.
• Conservar con la debida reverencia una imagen piadoaa de Cristo crucificado, y de la Virgen Dolorosa.
• Decir tres veces al día, con el deseo de conseguir una buena muerte para todos los miembros de esta Congregación, la Oración dominical y el Ave María, y luego la siguiente oración: Señor, en vuestras manos encomiendo mi espíritu y todos los que están o deben estar en la agonía de la muerte. María, Madre de gracia, Madre de  Misericordia, defendednos de nuestros enemigos, y recibidnos en la hora de la muerte. Amén.
• Confesar y comulgar una vez al mes, con un deseo de obtener una buena muerte para todos los miembros de esta Congregación; y antes de dejar la iglesia o capilla después de la Comunión, decir cinco veces el Padre nuestro y el Ave María en honor de las sagradas llagas de Nuestro Señor, y en nombre de todos los miembros que están afligidos, enfermos, agonizantes, o muertos.
• Estar presentes en la oraciones públicas de esta Congregación una vez al mes, o en caso de lícito impedimento, hacer las mismas oraciones o las cuentas en privado,
• Practicar alguna mortificación los viernes en honor de la Pasión de nuestro Señor.
• Todos los moembros son encarecidamente exhortados a hacer retiro espiritual de acuerdo a su conveniencia, y ofrecer los viernes todas sus buenas obras y oraciones en honor de la pasión de Nuestro Salvador y los dolores de Nuestra Señora, con un deseo de obtener para todos los miembros la gracia de hallar en la hora de la muerte un refugio seguro en las sagradas llagas de Cristo.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, behold, prostrate at thy feet, an ungrateful and perfidious creature. O my God, I have offended thee exceedingly in thought, in word, and in deed. My heinous crimes fixed thee to the bloody cross. To rescue me from eternal darnation, thou didst endure an agony of three hours on Mount Calvary. How much I am displeased with myself, how grieved at having offended thee, a God of infinite goodness, of infinite charity! I am astonished at thy unwearied patience in supporting a provoking sinner. With my whole heart I detest my sins; and because I love thee, and will love thee above all created things, I steadfastly purpose, by the help of thy grace, never more to offend thee, and rather to die than to commit one mortal sin. I condole with thee in thy sufferings and with thy afflicted Mother. Deliver me from the pains of hell; grant me patience in the adversities of this life, and conformity in all things to thy blessed will. I offer unto thee all my sufferings both of mind and body, in satisfaction for my sins, which have so often deserved eternal torments. Pardon all my enemies, and all those who bear ill will against me. Grant patience to the sick, and restore them to health: and support with thy assisting grace all who are in their agony, that they may not perish.

I condole with thee in thy sufferings and with thy afflicted Mother. Grant me a resolute will to seek after all things which concern my salvation. Grant me the grace final perseverance, that I may secure the enjoy  of  ment of that glory which was purchased at the price of thy most precious blood. Grant likewise, O Jesus, peace and relief to the souls in purgatory, and daily advance towards perfection thy holy servants in this world, more especially those who are of this confraternity. O Lord Jesus Christ, I adore the sacred wound in thy blessed side. I thank thee for the infinite love manifested towards us at the opening of thy sacred heart. Grant me a pure and perfect charity, that loving all things for thy sake, and thee above all things, I may breathe  my last in the purest sentiments of divine love. Protect thy holy Catholic Church, direct thy governing Vicar upon earth, all ecclesiastical orders, and all pious persons who are instrumental in the conversion of souls. Preserve in thy holy service all Christian kings and princes. Bring back into the way of salvation all those who have gone astray, whether through malice or ignorance; and subject unto thy sacred yoke all infidels, heretics, and enemies of thy holy name.  Our Father, &c. Let us pray

O Lord Jesus Christ, God of my heart; by those five wounds which thy love for us inflicted on thee, succour thy servants whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Amen.

   

Most merciful Redeemer; by those unspeakable torments, and by the grief which thou wast pleased to suffer for me, especially when thy soul was separated from thy body, 1 humbly beseech thee to secure my soul at the hour of its departure, and to comfort me then, as thou didst confort the penitent thief, with the blessed assurance that I shall be with thee in Paradise. Amen.

Let us say thrice the Our Father and thrice the Hail Mary, in memory of the three hours our Redeemer hung upon the cross, for the souls of the faithful departed of this Congregation.

Let us say once the Our Father and the Hail Mary, for those who are in the deplorable state of mortal sin.

Let us likewise say once the Our Father and the Hail Mary, for the person of this Congregation who is next to die, that he may depart happily, strengthened with the holy Sacraments of the Church.

   

Let us dispose ourselves, by acts of perfect contrition and of pure love of God, to receive profitably the Benediction of our Lord and Saviour in the adorable Sacrament of the Altar:

O merciful Redeemer, and God of infinite patience; great is my confusion at appearing in thy divine presence, because I have so frequently preferred contemptible creatures before thee, the Almighty Creator of the universe. I utterly detest my presumption in sinning in thy most pure sight. I acknowledge that I am a criminal, and I plead guilty at the bar of thy dread tribunal. Thou mightest have been glorified in thy justice by striking me suddenly dead, and by condemning me to eternal flames for the base indignities I have offered thee; but thou wast pleased to be glorified in the high prerogative of thy mercy, by recalling me to repentance. I abhor all my crimes of thought, of word, and of deed, not merely for the fear of punishment, and for the hope of reward, but chiefly for thy sake, and because thou dost infinitely detest them. O God of majesty and mercy, look upon the sacred marks in thy hands, feet, and side, which thou dost still retain in thy glorified body, that they may plead in my behalf. By that tender love which induced thee to create, to redeem, and to sanctify me, unite thy infinite merits to my profound misery. Strengthen my weakness, confirm this my resolution of never more offending thee; rather let me lose every thing, even life itself, than lose thy favour by mortal sin. My heart was created for thee, and I love thee better than myself. Every day of my life, and especially that on which I shall expire, I will strive to love and to serve thee for thy own sake, my God and my Creator. O Saviour of perishing mankind, who openest thy hand, and fillest every creature with benediction, give me now such a blessing as thou didst bestow on thy beloved disciples, when ascending in triumph from the mountain of Olives ; that I may live and die in these happy dispositions.
